At the close last Friday, the S&P 500 was down almost -12% for the young year.  There are 250 trading days in 2022 and we are thru 47, or 19%, as of 3/11. Some would say this is a small sample size.

About a quarter of the stocks in the S&P 500 are up so far, and three-quarters are down. 

Energy is one of the only sectors enjoying a good start to 2022, up about 40%.  Every other sector is down year to date.

Losses are not confined to obscure second-tier companies – among the worst performing stocks are some big names: a large streaming service (down -42%), a well-known social media co. (-44%), one of last year’s high-flying pharma’s (-50%) and an online $ transfer service (-50%). (Chart from
