Antidepressant use has increased globally in recent years and varies by country and economic status.
High-income countries have higher rates of antidepressant use than low- and middle-income countries. In 2022, Iceland had the highest antidepressant use in the world, with 157 daily doses per 1,000 people.
Low- and middle-income countries have lower rates of antidepressant use than high-income countries. For example, in 2022, Latvia had one of the lowest antidepressant use rates, with 24.3 daily doses per 1,000 people.
Women and older people have higher rates of antidepressant use than men and younger people. In the United States, 17.7% of women used antidepressants in the past 30 days in 2015–2018, compared to 8.4% of men.
My questions for you:
- What part does social media play in this depression “epidemic”?
- Media access?
- 24 hour “news” cycle?
- Instant “news”?
- Instant opinions?
In saving and posting this for compliance review and approval (I live in a HIGHLY regulated world folks), I ran across this item I posted three years ago… Irony #1.

Title: Ever Consider Not Reading or Listening to the “news”?
Tagline: ‘You Are What You Read:’ – attributed to Oscar Wilde.
#wisdom; #news; #anger; #ThinkingIsHard
News is by definition temporary…Why you should stop reading the news is a great article I found recently on fs.blog. An older article written back in 2013 before were started hearing about “fake news”.
It made me think of the pyramid above and how we have to process data to get information and then we have knowledge but decerning the prior three items to achieve wisdom is the goal.
Try it for a day. Can you go a week? May cut down gradually. Read it for data not opions…

Irony #2:
No, the irony of posting this on social media is not lost on me!
